Research Assistant
I participate in all aspects of production from game design to analysis and evaluation which means I have the unique opportunity to consider the next wave of gaming in varied educational settings while designing assessments for current products and playing with data. I also facilitate everyday happenings with staff and collaborators. Current and upcoming projects include evaluation of Lakeland, a real-time strategy game that depicts the challenges of managing nutrient cycles, and co-creating a data literacy fellowship experience for teachers this spring.
Founder
Koshkonong Trails is a project-based secondary school for students in grades 7-12. The primary focus of our curriculum is Environmental and Agricultural Sciences which is made easy by the gift of being situated on an 80 acre farm, Severson Learning Center. I have worked with the school district to develop our initial charter contract, recruit planning committee and governance board members, and market the school in local communities.I was the primary author on the $400k Charter School Program grant which Koshkonong Trails was notified that they received in Spring 2018. I continue to work to support the governance board and charter school staff as they open the door to serve students.
Assistant Director And Lead Teacher
I began as the Assistant Director where I was responsible for day to day operations of the center. I designed and implemented programs for students in grades K-16, taught remedial skills and test prep, as well as provided professional development for the staff at the center. I have since moved into a lead teacher role where I primarily work with students and office staff to ensure center fluidity in times of high volume operations.
Director At Severson Learning Center
I collaborate with teachers from CSD and neighboring school districts to create and implement curriculum that supports indoor learning at our school farm. Through grant funding, I support learning in all subjects and allow students to have opportunities they otherwise might not experience with regards to wildlife, animals, plants, and more. The school farm supports our community through a variety of gardens which help fund the PTO and provide food for the Cambridge Food Pantry. I am also assisting a group of supporters in designing a project-based agricultural/environmental charter school.
Secondary Science Teacher
During my time as a classroom teacher, I continuously worked to redefine the way we interact with students to engage and enlighten them. I became a trailblazer for the use of technology related to gamification of both content delivery and behavior management. I implemented standards-based grading as a pilot classroom and reworked the 6-8 science curriculum for the district to align with the Next Generation Science Standards. I continuously worked with staff to share the work I was engaging in and led several professional development sessions focused on technology use in the classroom: SAMR model, Google Apps for Education, gaming in education, and more.In my school, I worked with staff to implement a building-wide STEM program based around the Engineering Everywhere curriculum. The program was funded through a grant I wrote to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. While the program was short lived in its original conception, it moved the building forward in the way they collaborated with tech ed and the type of work they had students engage in.
Facilities Staff
I was one of the lead instructors of the introductory horseback riding program at the park district. I assisted in developing methods for client record keeping and ensuring that we could effectively communicate appropriate challenge with clients between seasons. I also worked with the general public through leading public trail rides.
