Bi-fuel/flexible fuel conversion is amongst the latest innovations in green, high efficiency vehicles. A difficulty arises in the tuning of flexible fuel engine control parameters, such as spark and valve timing, for different fuel compositions. Conventional approaches select control parameters that are adequate for the full range of allowable fuel compositions. However, for any given fuel, this typically results in sub-optimal performance of the engine, manifesting as lower fuel economy and higher emissions (than could be achieved if the engine control parameters were chosen for that fuel only). My research involves the development of automatic online calibration approaches that select the engine control parameters to be optimal for the current, unknown fuel composition. This will allow higher fuel economy and lower emissions in future flexible fuel engines.
