Science Policy Fellow in Spectrum, International Diplomacy, and Satellite-Astronomy CoordinationIn this role I interface with federal agencies, the private sector, universities, and international bodies to ensure responsible use of the electromagnetic spectrum, including through the United Nations' Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS) and International Telecommunications Union (ITU). I also promote protections for ground-based astronomy by coordinating groups to evaluate the impacts of satellite constellations on astronomical research and provide recommendations for preserving science output, and use those recommendations to ensure mutually agreeable operations between the satellite industry and Federally funded astronomy research centers. I also encourage innovative use of the electromagnetic spectrum to address societal problems, as prioritized in the 2022 CHIPS & Science Act and 2023 National Spectrum Strategy, by supporting NSF's Spectrum Innovation Initiative (SII) workforce and technology development projects. This involves coordinating NSF's leadership in developing a National Spectrum Workforce Plan, as tasked in the National Spectrum Strategy.

As a STEM Policy Fellow in the NC Department of Commerce Office of Science, Technology & Innovation (OSTI), I used my science communication skills and eye for creative scientific solutions to complicated problems to implement policy endeavors which improved the lives of everyone living in North Carolina. In particular, I supported the One North Carolina Small Business Program, which provides additional funding to local recipients of federal SBIR/STTR grants so that homegrown innovation can grow beyond expectations. I also supported the work of the NC Board of Science, Technology & Innovation (BSTI)—a State-appointed think tank of academic, business, and policy leaders tasked with identifying and advancing science- and technology-based economic development opportunities—including writing public advocacy pieces promoting programs and requesting funding and support directly from NC legislators. I contributed research to the 2024 Tracking Innovation Report, which monitors the impacts of these BSTI initiatives, and to a successful NSF Regional Innovation Engines Development Award (2304047) which aims to make the Carolinas the offshore wind hub of the mid-Atlantic.

Astronomy-Physics research under Professors Thomas Balonek and Jeffrey BaryIn summer of 2013, I worked with three other students under the advisory Prof. Bary to determine the presence of photoevaporation in protoplanetary disks in the Orion Nebula. We presented our work at the Keck Northeast Astronomy Consortium (KNAC) Student Research Symposium at Vassar College on October 26, 2013.In summer of 2014, I worked alone under the advisory of Prof. Balonek exploring various methods of producing light curves of type Ia supernovae observed at Colgate University's Foggy Bottom Observatory. I presented my research at the Keck Northeast Astronomy Consortium (KNAC) Student Research Symposium at Swarthmore College on November 8, 2014.My work on supernovae was carried on into my senior project in physics, as I applied my light curve production method on type Ia supernova SN 1991M observed at Foggy Bottom Observatory. From this data, I tested the relationship between type Ia supernova light curve shape and peak brightness and determined a distance to this supernova. I will carry this work on into publication, where I apply this process using four other supernovae, and define a standard procedure for supernova photometry at Colgate University.
