Profile bio

About Joshua Reding, Phd

I am an astronomer, philosopher, and educator, and I hope to keep the world curious, considerate, and optimistic of its role in the great cosmic narrative. I completed my MS and PhD in Physics at UNC Chapel Hill with a focus on observational astronomy and instrumentation, and my BA at Colgate University with a double major in Astronomy-Physics and Philosophy. My doctoral research focused on white dwarf merger remnants as "failed" type Ia supernovae. I am also passionate about science education and outreach, and am pursuing a career in science policy and management. I began this journey as a member of the 2022-2023 North Carolina STEM Policy Fellowship cohort working in the NC Department of Commerce Office of Science, Technology & Innovation to support and promote homegrown ingenuity in the Tarheel State. I am now delighted to bring this policy experience back to my field of research as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the National Science Foundation's Division of Astronomical Sciences, Electromagnetic Spectrum Management Group, where I will work to ensure a bright future for ground-based observational astronomy.
