The Fire Management Officer (F.M.O.) works under the direction of the Sheriff within the Operations Division. Advises the Sheriff, Commissioners and other Department and Elected Officials during an emergency. Works as a liaison to maintain good working relationships, promotes sound planning, and assists with conflict resolution among the emergency service provider agencies within Boulder County. Maintains programs and provides training. These include major event and disaster management, law enforcement special operations, flood detection and warning, wild land fire suppression, search and rescue, and hazardous materials mitigation. Supervises fire staff personnel, coordinating the hiring, evaluation and discipline of employees. Oversees budget administration including planning, expenditures tracking and grant request. Develops long term planning, training and response of diverse cooperative all-risk professional public safety providers along with elected officials and department heads.

Supervised suppression actions both on and off Forestlands. During the absence of the District Fire Management Officer assumed responsibility for all district fire management activities and programs. As a smokejumper, performed parachute jumps and other duties in the suppression of wild land fires. Assisted with fire dispatch through operation of radios, telephones, and other necessary equipment to exchange information for fire weather and other forest suppression activities. Implemented prescribed fire related planning and field operations duties. Provided various levels of management for Type 1,2 and 3 all-risk incidents.
