I work on the development of systems to integrate and analyze genetic, genomic and phenotypic information. I am one of the principal investigators of the Gene Ontology (GO) Consortium, an international effort to provide controlled structured vocabularies for molecular biology that serve as terminologies, classifications and ontologies to further data integration, analysis and reasoning. My interest in bio-ontologies stems as well from the work I do as a principal investigator with the Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) project at The Jackson Laboratory. The MGI system is a model organism community database resource that provides integrated information about the genetics, genomics and phenotypes of the laboratory mouse. My current research projects combine bio-ontologies and database knowledge systems to analyze disease processes with the objective of discovering new molecular elements and pathways that contribute to particular pathologies such as respiratory diseases.

Scientific StaffTigr 1993 - 1996While at TIGR, I was involved with the curation of Human ESTs, with the sequencing and assembly of some of the first genomes including Methanococcus, and with the creation of databases to capture the function and role of all human genes. I developed the 'Sequences, Sources, Taxa' database to track the relationship between sequence data and the source/specimen for that sequence. I worked on phylogenetic sequence analysis for Mollusks and was part of the the Molecular Evolution Group. -
Scientific StaffThe Smithsonian Institution 1989 - 1993During my time at the Smithsonian, I worked in the Laboratory of Molecular Systematics, a part of the Natural History Museum, first as part of the Biological Support Staff, and then as the Scientific Program Administrator. I conducted research on speciation and molecular systematics, primarily for bird species. I developed databases to manage specimen and tissue data.
