I had an amazing experience as an astrophysics researcher under Dr. Bayliss, working on a project primarily about a gravitationally lensed galaxy captured by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. During the summer of 2020, I worked a full-time research position, and then for months after, I continued to work on the project and attend meetings while focusing mainly on school.I learned different coding languages, with an emphasis on Python, Ciao, the programming language used for Chandra, and the Mac Terminal. Similarly, I learned to use astrophysics programs like DS9, which is where we manipulated data from Chandra. Using Jupyter Notebook and Ciao tutorials, I made numerous graphs from the astrophysics data. Data mining played a significant role in the project, as I had to ascertain what a graph meant and what an equation's solution suggested in terms of data from the image, as in how fast the galaxy is moving away from Earth.By the end of the summer, I read numerous astrophysics research papers to quantify my knowledge of my research and put a spin to the data. Instead of seeing a dot on an X-ray image, I explained theories as to what it could mean and what theoretical research it supports. I presented my research project to the physics department and made a PowerPoint to support my theories and data.
