About Julian Wolf
I'm interested in engineering and maintaining optical systems; designing and constructing ultra-high vacuum chambers; and doing almost anything related to scientific computing, from building control systems and interfaces to extracting and analyzing data from low-SNR readouts.Aside from physics, I enjoy maintaining a close relationship to local agriculture by eating seasonally and spending as much time as I can at farmers' markets (and farms). I have a strong interest in mid-century Americana clothing, and in its modern reproductions and reinterpretations; I also enjoy giving a second (and third, and fourth) life to well-worn clothes through visible mending, both by hand and by machine.
Listed skills include Matlab, Python, Latex, Java, and 8 others.

Scientist
CurrentWorking towards understanding, designing, and building next-generation inertial sensors.
Postdoctoral Researcher, Uc Berkeley Ultracold Atomic Physics
Investigated the trapping and cooling of transition metal atoms to ultracold temperatures. Gained useful experience working with innovative beam sources and unusual laser systems. Achieved the first ever magneto-optical trap of atomic titanium.
Graduate Student Researcher, Uc Berkeley Ultracold Atomic Physics
Studied quantum optomechanics and quantum spin optodynamics using a gas of near-degenerate rubidium atoms coupled to a high-finesse Fabry–Pérot cavity, focusing on building quantum feedback systems. Gained expertise in designing and building optical apparatus, working with complex control systems, and generally troubleshooting old, hacked-together laboratory equipment. Managed two servers servicing 20+ users and 80+ TB of data. Developed and maintained customized tools for large-scale version control and offsite backups.
Graduate Student Instructor
Led weekly lab projects and discussion sections for pre-med students learning about electromagnetism. Operated a flipped classroom in which students gained confidence with the material by actively engaging with it.
Junior Specialist, Uc Berkeley Ultracold Atomic Physics
Participated in an experiment aiming to form ultracold lithium–rubidium molecules for applications in quantum many-body simulations. Investigated possible loading schemes for a two-color dual-species optical dipole trap using numerical simulations and a toy theoretical model. Researched, designed, and constructed a Zeeman slower for lithium atoms using a novel single-winding architecture.
Farmers' Market Cheese Guy
Ran a single-person stall selling cheese, produce, and meat for a local ranch and creamery. Handled preparation, accounting, transportation, and customer interactions.
Farmers' Market Produce Guy
Helped to run a stall selling produce from a local farm at weekly markets.
Honours Research Thesis Student, Leslie Biophysics Lab
Designed, modeled, and constructed an apparatus used to wrap DNA around a rotating microwire for imaging. Produced software automating the extraction and analysis of useful data from microscope movies of wrapped DNA. Recorded and analyzed numerous movies showing the dynamics of DNA in a rotating flow field using a wide-field fluorescence microscope.
Tomlinson Mentoring Fellow
Organized and led weekly tutorials for an upper-division course in statistical mechanics along with graduate student instructors.
Doe Suli Instrumentation Intern, Lbnl Atlas Group
Developed a C++ / ROOT framework to test the efficiency of the FE-I4 detector chip under extreme operating conditions using data from test-beams at SLAC and CERN.
Software Development Intern
Designed and implemented algorithms to predict high-energy particle trajectories based on data from the Pixel Detector of the ATLAS experiment.
