About Julia Thrift

As Director of Healthier Place-making, I lead the TCPA’s work supporting people to create places where it is easier for everyone to live a healthier life. This includes bringing together planners, designers, public health teams, policy makers, academics and voluntary organisations, helping them collaborate across professional boundaries.Formerly a journalist, I have written for numerous publications and contributed to 'how-to' guides and academic papers about health and place-making, including the TCPA’s very popular free guide to creating 20-minute neighbourhoods. I co-ordinated the production of ‘Putting Health into Place’, the guide to creating healthier new communities published by NHS England in 2019. My communications skills are also put to use as a conference speaker, chair and podcast guest - and I still write.Throughout my career, I have been interested in the links between the design of the built environment and the quality of people’s lives. I was a Director at CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, where I set up CABE Space, the government's adviser on policy and practice regarding England's urban parks and public spaces. I have a degree in philosophy from University College London.
