Graduate Researcher: I designed and carried out two independent research projects processing Mg alloy WE43, first by spark plasma sintering and then by laser powder bed fusion. The goal of both projects was to achieve microstructural refinement for improved mechanical and corrosion performance. As an academic guest at ETH Zurich from 2015 to 2018 I gained expertise in high level electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, STEM/EDS), atom probe tomography, corrosion studies. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the ENG 45 course- Properties of Materials - I instructed students in labs on fundamental materials properties (bonding and crystal structures, mechanics and defects, diffusion and kinetics, phase diagrams, electronic materials) and materials analysis techniques.

Completed a research project that involved altering the surface structure of Ti-6Al-4V using laser surface scanning. Work included sample preparation and characterization using tribometry, Vickers hardness, optical and scanning electron microscopy for microstructural analysis. Presented this research in a poster competition at the Material Science and Technology Conference 2011. Project in progress creating a TiN layer on a cp-Ti substrate using laser surface scanning. Similar work using sample preparation and characterization techniques listed above as well as x-ray diffraction and coefficient of friction analysis. Presented preliminary results of this research in a poster competition at the Material Science and Technology Conference 2013, and is expected to be submitted for publication Summer 2014.

Part of a group design project for the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation creating a prosthetic ankle for amputees in Sierra Leone. Work included designing the prosthetic and forming prototypes from high density polyethylene and copolymer polypropylene using the limited tools available to the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation workshop in Sierra Leone.
