About Julie Akerly

Julie Akerly is a leader, mentor, and advocate for the arts. Her career is focused on building programs with the community and artists, supporting the professional development of artists, and creating equitable access to arts experiences. She is currently the Arts and Culture Manager for the City of Surprise, where she is in the process of building the first ever Arts and Culture Division for the city. After graduating from Arizona State University with an MFA in Dance and Interdisciplinary Media and Performance, she decided to stay in Arizona and work towards building more opportunities for artists. In 2014 she co-founded [nueBOX], an artist residency program for multi-disciplinary artists to create new work and develop their careers in the arts. In 2018 she received the Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award in Dance for her work in supporting and uplifting the Metro-Phoenix dance community. She has taught courses in higher education in arts management, dance technique, dance history, and art and technology. She previously worked at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the Dance Programming Manager, where she coordinated the annual National Dance Day festival programming, built relationships with the local dance community and stakeholders, and supported the presentation of touring and international dance artists at the Kennedy Center. She has also worked at the City of Tempe as the Community Arts Specialist where she developed the Arts in the Parks program with Tempe neighborhoods, worked on the Arts Grants and Public Art programs, and programmed live performances at the Tempe Center for the Arts 156 days of the year.
