This provides important insights to the industrial partner for removing the defects effectively (problem analysis and solving and project management) • Designed and fabricated an automated mechanism to enable the experiments to be conducted in an automated and accurate manner (automated device design, actuator and timer switch) • Designed a data acquisition system to collect operating parameters and experimental data (sensors, DAQ and LabView) • Experimentally investigated the fluid flow, heat and mass transfer of the melting of solid material in molten titanium during electron beam melting and identified the significant factors influencing the melting behavior (electron beam melting, data analysis, OM and SEM/EDX) • Developed a coupled fluid flow-thermal-composition Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of the melting of solid material in molten titanium which is capable of reproducing the experimental process and accurately predicting the melting rate (ANSYS CFX, ICEMCFD and programming) • Developed analytical models which allow the industrial user to quickly evaluate the melting rate of the inclusions with reasonable accuracy (similarity solution and empirical correlations) -
