About Juniper Rakhman Gerardi
I’m Juniper, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University (‘24) with a self-made major in fashion and apparel design. Through the highly selective Robertson Scholars Leadership program, I was enrolled at both Universities, taking advantage of the resources at both of these world-class institutions. I’m a designer, upcycler, jewellery maker, musician, and polyglot. I love incorporating bits of fashion history and my cultural background into my designs, which I make under my eponymous brand, JUNI. I am currently completing my third internship in the fashion industry, working at Colony Brands, Inc. for a six-month term. Here, I design for the womenswear brands Midnight Velvet and Ashro. At Colony I’ve been able to get a broad view of the fashion industry, from sourcing to manufacturing, technical design, and merchandising, all while honing my own design skills. It’s also been a chance to strengthen my digital design skill, including flats and technical drawings as well as fabric designs for seamless repeat prints. I am focused on sustainability in fashion, as well as focusing on well-made, tailored and bespoke garments. I designed and released their first collection in June-August of 2023 for major South African retailer Truworth's. Currently, I’m working towards launching my brand’s website and social media, as well as planning my next couture collection to be released in Spring of 2025.

Fashion & Apparel Design Intern
CurrentCollaborating with merchandizing, technical designers, sourcing managers, and other designers to design clothing aligning customer preferences with market trends. Creating tech packs and digital sketches, conducting live fittings. Lab dips and Pantone color-matching. Entering styles into PLM-flex software to streamline communication between home and global office.
Founder
CurrentSince May of 2022, I have worked towards starting and now growing my own small business. Initially, my business focused on curating a unique, high-quality collection of vintage clothes to bring to our customers via Depop, Poshmark, EBay, and in-person pop up markets. After strengthening my sewing skills, I have began working towards launching JUNI THE BRAND, an ethical and sustainable fashion brand which sells upcycled, handmade unique pieces made in the USA from second-hand textiles. Our aim as a small business is to celebrate fashion's rich history and creative wearable art pieces. We currently operate at markets and with pop-up shops, with a website and social media pages coming soon.
Costume Shop First Hand
Collaborated with the draper and shop manager to delegate tasks to stitchers, cutting and tracing patterns for productions like Le Prophète, Bard’s Opera Music Festival, and Urban Bush Women. Constructed complex garments, handled alterations, and provided wardrobe assistance during performances to ensure stage-ready quality.
Stitcher, Undergraduate Assistant
I started at Playmakers as a Friday afternoon volunteer, coming in for four hours every week to help with the construction of various costumes and broaden my sewing skills. Continuing to volunteer, I eventually began taking classes within UNC's Costume Production MFA program, learning firsthand skills like draping, patternmaking, and couture sewing and construction techniques. I Executed stitching tasks with precision, contributed to fittings, and assisted with fabric preparation, cutting, tracing, etc. ensuring the realization of the designer's vision in various productions. In my last year of employment at Playmakers, I was promoted to undergraduate assistant, continuing my prior responsibilities while using the skills I'd learned to help instruct and guide less-experienced stitchers in best practices for garment construction.
Fashion Design Intern
During my time at Reliance I developed a full range of roughly 30 original designs for Ginger Mary, a Truworth's brand. I independently sketched all designs, paying attention to the brand's history as well as upcoming trends in fashion via WGSN. I collaborated with patternmakers, machinists, and models in making the sketches come to life, then created a video, lookbook, and presentation about the collection. I sourced all patterns for the collection, working with manufacturers and stores in Cape Town, fabric importers, and factories abroad. I also used the Adobe suite to create several graphic tees and all-over print items.
Intern
Working with small, ethical fashion producer in Cape Town to help all around the studio - from screen printing to foiling, pattern cutting, and working towards collective deadlines. Also developed a full jewelry line, Helon Melon's first original jewelry line to represent the heritage and character of this company.
Sales Associate
Primary duties include interacting with customers and participating in efficient workplace operation in second-hand curated boutique. Involves knowledge of recent trends and styles, as well as of vintage clothing and accessory items.
Camp Concierge
Seasonal job position working in glamping resort near Acadia National Park, Maine. Primary duties included customer interaction and service, working between departments, and establishing programming for guests, like cultural workshops.
Global Education Intern
Working as a student intern with the Carolina Navigators at UNC-Chapel Hill entails learning about cultural groups from around the world as well as preparing cultural education materials from K-12 students across the state.
Host
Coordinating front of house and back of house interactions, sitting guests, ensuring a positive customer service experience for all.
Student Fellow
During this student fellowship, which was originally planned to last through June but cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked with DIGDEEP Right to Water to learn about the water crisis in Navajo Nation firsthand. When I was with DIGDEEP, I both worked with project managers on logistical tasks like surveying throughout the Nation and collecting information for water installations as well as shadowed water and solar technicians to learn the technicalities behind installing a functional, off-grid water tank electric plumbing system. I also learned a great deal about the Diné (Navajo) language and culture during my internship and about forming relationships across cultural boundaries.
