Spearheaded project to find biomarkers and functional proteins that increase cancer cell adhesion to pulmonary vascular walls. This work has resulted in an article currently under review.Supervised undergraduate work in the lab.Assisted the implementation and maintenance of a new departmental FACSFusion flow cytometer.Managed laboratory supplies, ordering and budget.

Conceived of and conducted dissertation work that explored the interactions between chemotherapy and the immune system mediated by the stress-inducible gene ATF3 in mouse models of breast cancer. Utilized in vitro and in vivo models, immunofluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry to discover pro- and anti-metastatic pulmonary macrophages regulated by ATF3.

Studied the role of microRNA in tumorigenesis and drug resistance in cancer, particularly in relation to tyrosine kinase receptors. Became familiar with mammalian cell culture and primary cell establishment, RNA-specific procedures and molecular biology techniques. Responsible for the design, implementation and troubleshooting of experiments. Constantly looked to contribute to projects in the lab, resulting in 10 papers within 3 years.

Worked under Dr. Shengzhong Duan in the lab of Dr. Richard Mortenson, which focused on the role of PPAR transcription factors in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Maintained a large transgenic mouse population and concentrated on the genotyping of these mice.

Worked under Dr. Kathleen W. Ignatoski in the Department of Surgery. Assisted in research on prostate cancer and adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC). Explored the use of mTOR and IGFR-1 inhibitors on ACC and developed a familiarity with mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques. Designed and presented a poster at the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Research Forum.
