Summer 2017 I continued my work at ERCOT to create useful tools for the IT Commercial Operations department. My first project involved an app within Splunk call ITSI (IT Service Intelligence). My goal was to create graphical elements showing high and low level information for the systems that make up our Retail Transaction Processing. Health scores were derived from key performance indicators such as failed transactions, CPU load, available memory, number of current processes, etc. Data is pulled from a variety of sources and servers. My second project was a continuation of my project from summer 2016. I completed ERCOT's transfer to Splunk and completely shut down the older legacy software they were using. This process involved communication with software users and final testing. Last minute requests and modifications were completed as well as minor tweaks. My third project was the upgrade from Splunk 6.4 to 6.6 company wide. There are numerous 3rd party apps/add-ons in use at ERCOT. The primary task was testing all of these apps/add-ons with the new version of Splunk and fixing any errors before proceeding into the production environment. This project also gave me insight into the complexity and importance of tracking and documenting a project. In my fourth project I wrote an app for Splunk. Using my app, Splunk alerting is integrated with Jira allowing Jira tasks to be created automatically when Splunk alerts are triggered. The app's flexibility also allows any script to be launched when an alert is triggered. An additional side project I completed was the integration of our Splunk alerts with Hipchat. The alerts are conditional statements based on Splunk searches. This was applied to approximately 200 alerts. Over the course of the summer my projects were treated like Agile Sprints. We held stand ups every morning to discuss progress, roadblocks, and projected work for that day. We used Jira to host our scrum boards.

Intern in the IT support services group at ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas). ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to 24 million Texas customers -- representing about 90 percent of the state’s electric load. As the independent system operator for the region, ERCOT schedules power on an electric grid that connects more than 46,500 miles of transmission lines and 570+ generation units. It also performs financial settlement for the competitive wholesale bulk-power market and administers retail switching for 7 million premises in competitive choice areas. During my time at ERCOT, I worked on a project to migrate important data for real time dashboards from an old outdated and unsupported in house application to a fully supported 3rd party application called Splunk. The new system is more dynamic, reliable, and user friendly than the old application. I worked directly with the data queries and simulated the function of multiple data collectors within Splunk. Once the data had been migrated into the new system I created informative real time dashboards that were deployed into the production systems.
