Worked as a tutor, role model, and mentor to students attending Homestead Sr. High School improving their attendance, behavior, and coursework. Corps members can be assigned to any grade from 3rd - 9th grade. I was assigned to a high school, working with 9th graders. Having a teamwork effort with the teacher, we were able to create a great learning environment for the kids. I successfully provided 40 at-risk students with year long intensive academic intervention resulting in a 100 % increase in math proficiency. Also, I had an opportunity to create bonds with the students to build a trusting relationship during after school hours with further tutoring and different mentoring opportunities. Lastly, I served as the attendance coordinator in which I implemented highly successful attendance initiatives engaging a student body of 1,200. These initiatives contributed to attendance increases by 95% in the 4th largest school district in the country. This was a great eye opening experience and allowed me to make a positive impact in the community I live in and in the lives of the kids I worked with.
