ImiTec provides radiation mapping/monitoring/analysis services to end users by the means ofcollecting storing and exporting radiation and location data. I was initially brought on to develop the desktop client software, which could visualise and export this data. The desktop application used an Electron, Typescript and React + Redux stack, with an encrypted Protocol Buffers schema for sending and receiving the collected data. I unfortunately decided to end this contract early due to my mental health being at risk, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working with Dr Nello Cristianini, I built a monitoring and audit system (Systemwatch) for the Engineering Mathematics large scale modular data collection system, which automatically collects and annotates media such as news articles and tweets. Systemwatch presents information about the collection process on approximately 10 servers, including system resource usage and module performance. The system also allows for auditing of the data sources and annotation systems to ensure collection is kept to high throughput and quality. The system is web-based, making use of React, Python and Websockets.I held the responsibility for managing the clusters software configuration, migrating software such as Java modules and MongoDB instances to new servers when retiring old servers, or in anticipation of planned downtime in certain buildings of the University. Continuous collection was thus ensured through a combination of such maintenance and a distributed MongoDB cluster consisting of replication and sharding. As the Java software was quite old, the source files had been lost and to update/create new modules, I made use of reverse engineering and decompilation to improve the system.I contributed to Cristianini's research in the remaining free time of the role, in part by implementing LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) analysis in python, which is used by his students but is also deployed on the collection cluster to analyse tweet sentiment. It has been used to map the political alignment of British and American news articles from the 19th century, and also used to analyse emotion cycles of gender-annotated tweets over the diurnal period.

Co-supervised by Dr Dima Damen and Dr Flavia De Luca, I undertook an internship part of the Interdisciplinary Research Internship Scheme (IRIS) within the departments of Computer Science and Civil Engineering. Over the 3 months I developed a solution using computer vision and deep learning techniques to localize and count vehicles in satellite imagery using an Amazon Mechanical Turk data set of human annotated vehicles. My work has aided research within the department of Civil Engineering as a measure of impact and recovery of natural disasters.

Beginning as an apprentice, I gained a great deal of experience working at Adaptive, being full time for a year after college and part time during university. I had a positive impact on many clients including the Post Office, Walking for Health, Cruising Association, Lingoo, National Trails and and FC Business Intelligence. My role required knowledge across the board for Drupal and Web Development, writing custom modules and themes, but also working within the CMS for such tasks as building complex views.
