I have over 25 years of experience working in the public, private, and academic sectors. I am a licensed engineer, a certified planner with a transportation planning specialty, along with an educator and instructional designer. I have earned additional credentials from the USGBC/GBCI as a LEED accredited professional in neighborhood development and from ACCO as a certified climate change professional. My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Master of City and Regional Planning, and Master of Education in Learning Technologies from the Ohio State University.I serve as the President of Burton Planning Services, a planning and environmental firm focused on sustainable solutions, that I started in 2008. During my career, I have developed broad skillsets in multi-modal transportation planning and engineering, community planning and development, environmental studies and hazard mitigation, and education (in-person training and e-learning) and engagement projects. Through my various roles, I have also gained expertise in leadership, program and project management, proposal and grant writing, and marketing and business development.Additionally, I am an Associate Professor of Practice in City & Regional Planning at the Ohio State University, and I am an affiliated member of OSU’s Sustainability Institute. At OSU, I teach studios and courses on transportation, sustainability, professional development, green building, resiliency and future cities, energy, and municipal planning and zoning. I have experience teaching in-person and remotely along with developing online asynchronous courses for both OSU students and for OSU College of Engineering's Professional and Distance Education Programs.Over a career spanning two decades and multiple sectors, I have actively pursued my overall mission of helping people live sustainable and meaningful lives. Through my work in practice, I have focused on helping communities become more livable, healthy, accessible, equitable, and connected. Through my work in education, I have focused on helping students by teaching them the sustainability principles of environment/economy/equity, prioritizing experiential learning, making education more accessible to diverse learners, and mentoring students in finding relevant and rewarding careers.
