As a person with a PhD in Ethnomusicology who gladly ended up with a career in digital marketing, the qualities that drive me are curiosity, resourcefulness, and an intuition about what makes people tick. Curiosity has been a life-long friend. As a kid I was never bored; I was always reading, performing, and looking to the next thing while still doing a good job at the last. As an adult, curiosity carried me through my interdisciplinary grad school experience and into a career in marketing. Today, my curiosity translates into an unrelenting need to research, grow, ask the right questions, and approach every task with best practices.During grad school, resourcefulness allowed me to support myself in a city with escalating rent. In addition to my teaching assistantships and research fellowships, I did freelance work helping individuals and startups perform tasks they were stretched too thin to do. These tasks included teaching an art collector how to use computers, developing travel itineraries, executing email marketing strategies, and starting a local non-profit. Today, my resourcefulness allows me to manage complex projects, complete tasks efficiently and effectively, and develop new solutions to ongoing problems. Some insight into solutions: strong relationships built on open communication are often the answer.That insight brings me to my intuition about what makes people tick. Ethnomusicology is the study of people and their relationship with music. This anthropological background, combined with years of experience making music accessible to freshmen at 8:30 am, means I have an instinct for what excites, confuses, and bores people.
