Key Experience and Skills: MTSS: At Belfair Elementary I served on the MTSS committee and have helped create and tweak various MTSS processes. I also created and implemented the concept of the WIN (What I Need) room, where Tier 3 students come in and are educated alongside special education students to create a more inclusive environment. The classroom is organized into 4 small group areas, keeping distractions to a minimum and intervention intensity to a maximum. I also attended data dive days and assisted with the process of moving students through these tiers based on data, served as a resource to teachers to help answer questions about interventions, and helped select the right progress monitoring tool to assess the intervention used. I also analyzed the district Fastbridge data to discover the need for more instruction in phonemic awareness, researched interventions, found Heggerty, presented it to admin, and once purchased, trained staff on implementation. I also further analyzed data to find a weakness in the area of phonics. Again I researched various intervention programs, found UFLI, presented it to admin, they purchased it, and I trained and was ready to support other teachers as needed. Special Education: I have my Masters in Special Education, so I understand how WA state is moving forward with using MTSS as a means to determine qualification for special education services, and can help with this process. I know how to create classrooms that work for all students, including those with IEPs, and I am confident in my ability to replicate that for any district. I know how to manage case loads, write and implement IEPs, provide appropriate accommodations and modifications, as well as how to provide specially designed instruction in all areas of qualification. I am knowledgeable in special education law and worked with my districts to ensure we stayed in compliance. Structured Literacy / Science of Reading: I have been studying the Science of Reading for the past 6 years and understand the WA state law for structured literacy (SOR) interventions to be used in tiered interventions and the coinciding need for ongoing teacher training in this area. I have already taken the OSPI 18 clock hour Structured Literacy, MTSS, and Dyslexia courses, the Science of Reading Developing Reader (grades 1-12), Emerging Reader (PreK-1), and SOR Vocabulary from Really Great Reading, and countless other PDs and book studies over the years on this topic. I am ready and prepared to share my knowledge with others starting their journey on this path.
