As a civil rights attorney and a lifelong thespian, she has learned from and worked in the unique space between the seemingly distinct worlds of art and law. She is passionate about using her legal expertise to empower theatre community members to stand up for their rights and create truly safe and equitable spaces, while bringing attention to artistic narratives that can open minds, change perspectives, and bring human faces to complex legal or political challenges.Kaiya Lyons currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Monumental Theatre Company and as Outreach Chair of the American Constitution Society D.C. Lawyer Chapter. She is the Senior Legal Counsel in the Legal Affairs Department of the American Association for Justice. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2016 and her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the George Washington University in 2013.Kaiya was also a co-Founder and President of That's Our Cue, a non-profit corporation based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together to support those in need. Founded in September 2017, That's Our Cue was a venue for the D.C. theatre community to channel their talents and passions to provide financial aid to local, national, and international charities, through its bimonthly broadway karaoke events in Capitol Hill.
