About Robin Kamenicky

Researcher, engineer and consultant who worked on the development of plasma-facing components for nuclear fusion, numerical code development and validation for immersion quenching, enhanced CO2 reciprocating compressor coefficient of performance by 3.7 % and significantly improved liquid-gas separator efficiency.I have recently finished a postgraduate doctoral degree at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. The research aimed to develop and validate computational code capable of describing complex physics during immersion quenching, a metallurgical process altering metallic materials properties via rapid cooling from elevated temperature, approaching up to 1000°C. Significant importance was given to the wall boiling boundary condition, thus the heat transfer coefficient and solid-fluid interface stability. The open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software OpenFOAM was the utilized code, and the work was performed for Auber & Duval. Besides the research project, I participated in a consultancy on multiphase flow effects in a horizontal liquid-gas separator and suggested improvements to increase its efficiency.Before the doctorate, I worked as a scientific researcher in Research Centre Rez, Prague. Here, I had an opportunity to take part in the development of nuclear fusion technologies intended for power plants ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and DEMO (Demonstration Power Station). The research focused on thermohydraulics and structure mechanics of plasma-facing components.In 2015, I received a master's degree in power engineering at the Brno University of Technology, the Czech Republic. The master thesis titled "Valves timing of compressor for CO2 refrigerant" targeted the coefficient of performance (COP) of CO2 reciprocating compressor via modifications of the valve plate and valves themselves. The work was performed for Emerson Climate Technologies, the compressor producer. As a result, a patent has been considered because the COP improved by 3.7 %.During my university studies, I had an internship as technical software support at Motorola Solutions. Further, I was a member of a European-wide student organization, Board of European Students of Technology.My interest is predominantly in computational physics, CFD and structural mechanics. Apart from using general numerical approaches like finite volume and the finite element, I am also curious about physics-informed machine learning. Finally, I enjoy developer jobs using C++, Python and bash.
