Karen is an Indigenous researcher and teacher with a passion for improving Aboriginal education. My unprecedented and original research examines how mainstream teaching practices and education policies in NSW align or misalign to support Aboriginal children who have grown up with a level of disconnection from their culture, ancestry and Aboriginal knowledges. My research fills the gap in understanding the challenges and complexities that educational stakeholders may be facing in urban NSW primary schools when they attempt to support Aboriginal children's identities in these contexts. My preservice students are first and foremost my inspiration and motivation. Their holistic success in all they pursue is at the heart of my foundations as a teacher, colleague and community member. Here's what my students loved most about my teaching approach:"She is an expert at her craft... Karen is a soft and humble person who oozes charisma making her a very engaging and approachable person. It is obvious Karen values each and every one of her students...""... the best tutor I’ve ever had... her pedagogical approach is by far the most effective I’ve ever experienced. Her classes are a safe learning place for all people. She honestly believes in her students, and I think this has motivated me to do my absolute best in this class to make her proud of me!""She encourages us to challenge the norm and critically think about things before settling on our stance/final view - which I think is amazing, as these skills will help us outside the university and in the working world."
