Scientific summaryI hold a PhD in Immunology since 2002, from the Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy (Université de la Méditerranée – France), where I specialized in optimizing antigen delivery to dendritic cells with liposomes for optimal activation of CD4 and CD8 T cells. Then I pursued a post-doctoral training at the MRC Centre for Immune Regulation in the laboratory of Professor Ian MacLennan (University of Birmingham – UK), where I studied the molecular determinants of Th2 and TFh CD4 T cell differentiation. In 2011, I joined the laboratory of Professor Bruno Silva-Santos at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular | João Lobo Antunes (iMM|JLA, Lisbon – Portugal) to study the transcriptional regulation of γδ T cells. When I was awarded an investigator FCT fellowship in 2014, I embraced the opportunity to change field to tumor immunity, with particular focus on lymphoid-myeloid interactions within the tumour microenvironment.Since 2020, I have been a consolidator researcher with the FCT CEEC Individual programme. I have developed and now lead a line of research dedicated to programming of the myeloid compartment to induce protective lymphoid antitumour immunity capable of controling tumour progression. Currently, I am finalizing a study exploring the antitumor potential of macrophages using single-cell RNA-sequencing approaches. In 2021, I was given the unique opportunity to co-lead the Advanced Breast Cancer Translational Laboratory, which is integrated in the human-centered clinical and translational research objective of the iMM-CARE. Our primary focus is to address the significant health challenge of metastatic breast cancer, aligning with many of my longstanding and recent scientific interests.Scientific interest and Current Lines of ResearchOver the past decade, my work has centered on immuno-oncology. I have investigated the interactions between antitumor neutrophils and γδ T cells, anti-metastatic monocytes and NK cells, and more recently I have explored the longitudinal response and molecular mechanisms of tumour-associated macrophage anti-tumour programming. Additionally, my innate curiosity and propensity for collaboration have enabled me to contribute to examining the immune response against pathogens such as Trypanomosa brucei and Plasmodium – Malaria.I am currently developing a project that builds naturally on these long-lasting scientific interests, exploring the role of microbiota in interactions between neoplastic and immune cells in breast cancer.

Our primary focus is addressing the critical health challenge of metastatic breast cancer, which aligns with many of my long-standing and recent scientific interests.I have a long-standing interest in immunology, particularly in understanding how immune responses are orchestrated in vivo. Over the past decade, my research has consistently focused on immuno-oncology. I have explored the interactions between antitumor neutrophils and γδ T cells, anti-metastatic monocytes and NK cells, and more recently, I have studied the longitudinal response and molecular mechanisms of tumor-associated macrophage anti-tumor programming. My curiosity and collaborative nature have also enabled me to contribute to diverse studies examining immune responses against pathogens such as Trypanosoma brucei and Plasmodium (malaria).Currently, I am developing a project that builds on these long-standing scientific interests, exploring the role of microbiota (both gut and tumor-resident) in the interactions between neoplastic and immune cells in breast cancer. These subjects, related to immune responses, overlap with my main scientific interests and define my past and present lines of research. These themes are addressed through both theoretical and theoretical-practical classes, and I also evaluate student presentations of scientific articles and proposed topics.
