Providing reading interventions for elementary school children was where I discovered that despite daily group work, the children in my groups were not improving. I became interested in dyslexia and began studying the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This program is indeed a game changer for the 1-in-5 children in the world who have dyslexia and cannot learn to read the mainstream way. I initially spent a year studying with a seasoned tutor in my area, learning how the program works and working on-site with her students. I so enjoy this work. Nothing makes me more happy than to actually watch children progress and begin to love reading! Barton is a systematic approach and has been proven to improve reading skills and the confidence that comes with it! I am a proponent of supporting the positive facets of dyslexia. I find that dyslexic children are socially developed, creative, good with working with people. They are amazing solution finders. It is not a disability, but instead a difference. With positive reinforcement, they can go far in life, potentially exceeding successes made by typical students.
