About Karla Smith
Karla J. Smith is a SIL Certified International Senior Education and Literacy Consultant. Starting in 1977, she taught classes for all ages, from the pre-school level up to adults returning to earn their high school diploma. She has more than twenty-four years of experience facilitating literacy and education programs for non-dominant ethnolinguistic communities in Asia. She was involved with the Iranun language development programme in Sabah, Malaysia from its inception in 1998, and then broadened her experience to other programmes. She has traveled to a number of other places in Asia to consult and train people in the areas of programme planning, curriculum development, materials development, teacher training and monitoring and evaluation. She has considerable experience working in multicultural teams and working with communities. Dr. Smith also has significant field experience in training trainers and teachers for early childhood and primary education and adult literacy and consulting for programmes in Asia-Pacific. She has taught courses at the postgraduate level, literacy and multilingual education, at universities in Australia, England, USA and Thailand. Besides various articles and books, Dr. Smith published Heritage Language Playschools for Indigenous Minorities (2011), a practical early childhood education book. She was co-editor of the book, The Iranun of Sabah: Language and Culture of an Endangered Minority in Malaysia, published (2011) by Pelanduk Publications, Kuala Lumpur. From 2014 she has been an advisor in the Ministry of Education Timor Leste and led the Multilingual Education (MLE) programme starting with Preschool and Grade 1 as a pilot project.; the classes have reached Grade 6 in three languages. She also works with Grow Timor HANDS in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Timor-Leste. She volunteers with community programs, including in West Timor. She is on the Board of Governors for Seri Jubilee International School in Johor, Malaysia, and continues as an international education and literacy consultant in the Asia-Pacific area.
