Project: “Synthesis of Sterically Hindered Ethers of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose by Reductive Etherification”Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Derek GrayDeveloped an innovative approach to cellulose derivatization through reductive etherification chemistry. In the course of this project, I- synthesized and purified reactant, product and by-product model compounds- optimized reaction conditions through an NMR model compound study- synthesized novel cellulose derivatives by application of the optimized conditions- characterized novel derivatives by NMR, TGA, DSC, HPLC(GPC) and polarized microscopy.

Title: "Current Biorefinery Scenarios: Studies into Ammoxidation of Lignocellulosic Material and Periodate Oxidation of Cellulose"Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Thomas RosenauProject 1:“Formation of Phytotoxic Substances upon Ammoxidation of Mono- and Polysaccharides”. o Identified potential sources of plant toxicity in the preparation of a fertilizer from lignin-rich biomass fractions.o Optimized an analytical method for the identification and quantification of unknown substances in complex mixtures. o Synthesized reference compounds for toxicity testing.o Proposed reaction mechanisms for the formation of newly identified compounds.Project 2: “Novel Renewable Binders Based on Periodate-oxidized Cellulose”o Developed renewable, non-food based resin components for substitution of industrial binder resins.o Project resulted in improved preparative and analytical methods and a better understanding of the chemistry, degradation and crosslinking of oxidized cellulose.
