Working as a DevOps Sys Engineer in a SaaS company can be very varied in your day to day work.Depending on what is happening on your Agile board or what projects you are currently working on, every day can be very different from the last.Tasks include:Event Monitoring - Keeping an eye on alerts and issues, resolving anything that could have knock-on effects on services in production before it becomes a problemBuilding OS Templates - Creating and updating OS templates (Windows Server 2008/2012, CentOS) to incorporate Line-of-Business apps and simple setup when new server's or services are required.Firewall's & Switches - Configuring Cisco switches, Fortigate firewalls, Firewall Rules, IPSec VPN's, configuring VLAN's etc.Environments - Building new work environments or expanding on existing ones, researching new technologies to resolve current issues or to allow for new features. Daily roles as an IT Admin included:• Monitoring systems (CPU, memory, disk space, etc.) and reporting/correcting any issues.• Installing, configuring, updating and maintaining server OS/software/hardware, predominately on Microsoft platform.• Setup, Manage and Administer virtualized environments based on Hyper-V 2012.• Supporting ShoreTel phone system.• High-level troubleshooting of servers.• Problem solving end user desktop issues.• Replacing failed hardware and addressing system problems.• Liaising with hardware/service providers, purchasing hardware, escalating issues to vendors etc.• Installing software upgrades and security patches.• Deploying, installing and administering desktop environment.• Cabling and port configurations for end users.• Manage and administer Active Directory.• Create and maintain technical documentation to include Visio diagrams to ensure efficientplanning and execution, including design, installation, and administration documentation.

Spector is a MSP of IT services, my roles included:Desktop Admin - From setting up PC's and Laptops to rolling out WDS to different sites for easily managed images for clients.Server Admin - The setup, deployment and maintenance of all things Microsoft Server. Server 2003 - 2012. Hyper-V Server virtualization P2V of servers, Exchange 2003 - 2013, Office 365 etcBackup Admin - Backup and maintenance of servers with many mainstream tools (Symantec Backup Exec, Shadowprotect, Intronis etc).Networking - Creating network plan's, setting up software PBX systems, setting up and deploying network infrastructure, working with a range of different routers and switches (Fortigate, Sonicwall, Astaro, Lancom etc). Site-to-Site VPN's, SSL clients.Due to the range of clients with Spector, all sites were different and had different requirements, so you always had something new to learn.
