K-4 Reading Interventionist
I hosted small group and one on one sessions with students ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade. With some students I assisted in their learning of the alphabet, with others I guided them through the SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological awareness, Phonics and Sight words) phonics program and with the 4th graders I hosted a BAR (Being A Reader) group.
Student Success Coach
Support 7th grade Math classrooms at Denny International Middle School. Provide one on one and small group tutoring to support underperforming and underserved students. Collaborate with a team of 9 other AmeriCorps members to foster a positive school environment, improve attendance rates, coordinate an after-school tutoring program, and build relationships with students. Represent my school team on Corps Council which filters through monthly surveys (pulse check) to gauge overall well-being serving in the Corps, plans self-care events, and compile a resource book for things to do in Seattle.
Mentor
STRIDE (Students Together Reaching for Individual Development and Education) was a very impactful program for me to join as an incoming freshman to Davidson. As a mentee, I was able to move into my dorm room early and was taken to Charlotte, NC in order to get to know other freshman and students of color, but also learn more about what be means to be a POC at a predominantly white institution. STRIDE is much more than a minority mentorship program. It has a goal of fostering community in order to increase retention/graduation rates for students of color at Davidson. As a mentee, I learned not only the importance of standing up for myself and strengthening my own identity but how meaningful it would be for me to give back and be a mentor.I mentored a freshman my sophomore and senior years of college. I honestly feel like I learned more from them then I could teach them. This experience really taught me that just because I was older and knew more about Davidson, that I still could learn so much about reasons why they came to Davidson, why they joined a certain organization or picked that major/minor. Encouraging others to talk about their passions and interests, pushed me to solidify mine. And really pinpoint the reasons why I do what I do.
Community Relations Chair
As Community Relations Chair of the BSC, I attended monthly executive board meetings where I was expected to provide insights on what my committee had been working on, and what our next steps looked like. The two main events my committee and I planned were a Thanksgiving dinner that raised money to purchase hygiene supplies for a woman's shelter and the iDress for Lupus Fashion Show that encourages students to showcase their own identities while supporting local businesses, and raising money for the Lupus Foundation of America. I only spent one year as chair of this committee but I served on it for 3 years and in that time I helped to plan other events such as a Hunger Banquet, a restoration project for the library and a social justice themed panel with Davidson professors.
Idress For Lupus Model Coordinator
As a model coordinator, I had the main roles of arranging sponsors to use their clothes in the show, familiarizing models with proper runway techniques, ensuring models feel comfortable in the clothes they were given to wear and organizing publicity for the show. This fashion show was such an exciting contribution to my college experience because it allowed me to bring my favorite parts of my modeling career from middle school into my adult life. iDress for Lupus combines fashion and activism to raise funds and awareness for the Lupus Foundation of America. The show strives to showcase the various identities and group affiliations of the students at Davidson College. The first half of the show is typically students representing themselves by wearing their own clothes and the second half is reserved for the “designer” clothes. We like to support local businesses and help them advertise their clothing brands.
Summer Intern
Sales Associate
Events Chair
I had a role in the chartering process of this organization by helping to write the bylaws and completing the paperwork to be recognized as an organization by the school. In my role as events chair, I planned events, reached out to co-sponsors and worked closely with the treasurer to create budgets. I also planned monthly general body meetings that usually involved making natural hair products. For one meeting I created a handbook to promote healthy hair growth. It provided a detailed description of the item (how to use it) and its benefits. This was a fun group because it was not just for women with kinky textured hair. We talked about all hair types and textures and encouraged men to be more conscious of healthy hair strategies too.
Camp Counselor
At CMA, I was a counselor for girls going into 1st and 2nd grades. The structure was a week-long, resident camp, divided into 9 sessions during the summer. During that time, I became archery certified and was able to set up the equipment and teach girls how to use a bow and arrow. I also spent a significant part of my day at the lake, distributing life jackets, providing water safety tutorials, and best practices for canoes and kayaks. This summer I learned a lot about teamwork and how to persevere through long hours. Since I was with the kids all day and through the night, I became a support system for them and addressed their needs at any time.
