My research focuses on ancient Greek and Roman medicine, science, technology, and magic. I'm particularly interested in the tools and strategies (both physical and conceptual) that inhabitants of the ancient Mediterranean used to understand, explain, and gain control over Nature’s “givens,” such as disease, death, inclement weather, and aspects of personal identity (e.g. gender, ethnicity, ability, and age). I recently co-edited a multi-authored volume titled Down to the Hour: Short Time in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East and am working on a monograph provisionally titled Doctors on the Clock: Hourly Timekeeping in Ancient Greek and Roman Medicine. I regularly teach courses in Greek and Latin language, Roman history, and academic writing, as well as thematic history courses such as Ancient Magic, Ancient Medicine, Ancient Science & Technology, and The Ancient Other.I am passionate about project- and skills-based teaching, interdisciplinary research, academic outreach, and educational program and policy development. Whenever I can make the time, I am also a creative writer, dancer, gymnast, and actress.
