Mechanical Team Member
On the mechanical team at ARVP, I develop mechanical subsystems for our robot, Arctos. My most significant project so far has been the torpedo subsystem. This subsystem shoots two torpedoes independently of one another using one servo motor. It was prototyped using 3D printing and metal laser cutting. Completing this project greatly improved my skills using CAD software and GD&T.
Administrative Team Member
On the administrative team, I ran events and completed grant applications for ARVP. This involved booking venues, providing food, planning transportation, communicating with attendees and ensuring that the correct health and safety protocols were followed. The largest event I ran was a robotics showcase for ARVP's latest robot, Arctos. This involved a full aquatic demonstration with media, faculty and sponsor attendance.
Research Assistant
I worked as a research assistant in Jason Carey's multifunctional composite lab. In this job, I studied strength characteristics of tubular composite braids. This included an investigation of the tensile properties of braids with different resin matrices and an analysis of thermal expansion behavior of aramid braids. In addition to my lab assistant tasks, I conducted my own research on the abrasion resistance of composite braids for use in umbilical cables of underwater remotely operated vehicles. I published a conference paper from this work. Aside from research, I assisted with lab maintenance and safety. I wrote code and built small tools to assist in novel research methods.
Curriculum Developer
As a Program Developer for JIVAM, I created a comprehensive numeracy program for students from grades one to six living in rural India. To create this program, I started with research. I read textbooks that covered the Indian math curriculum and reached out to Canadian and Indian teachers to become familiar with their teaching methods. I then developed the program by translating topics into practical activities for students that could be done without equipment. Each class started with a big picture talk about the importance of the skill and where it is applied in real life. Then concepts were covered by the teacher. This was followed up with activities with lots of time for teachers and volunteers to work with students one on one. This program has been implemented in rural India.
Estimating Student
At Melloy Industrial Services, I developed cost estimates for industrial projects. Projects included tank, duct and pipe spool fabrication as well as turnaround tasks including heat exchanger repairs and structural fabrication. Each estimate had to include material cost, consumables, labor hours, delivery, NDT and many other job specific requirements.
Patient Partner
I worked with a team of researchers and healthcare professionals to develop an equine assisted psychotherapy program for patients with eating disorders. The objective was to use the program as a supplement to traditional treatment. My role on the team was to provide advice and ideas based on my own lived experience. This study was the first of its kind in Canada and has been featured in Horse Canada Magazine.
Virtual Resident Assistant
Working as a virtual resident assistant gave me the unique opportunity to link students all over the world to the University of Alberta community. I provided advice and support to students regarding academic success, health and campus resources. By running weekly group calls and creative programs I was able to create an online community. In addition, I collaborated with other resident assistants to implement a residence wide quarantine pen pal program to foster community connection.
Aquatic Leader (Lifeguard)
Working as an Aquatic Leader greatly improved my communication and leadership skills. I promoted safety in the facility and upheld rules and regulations. When faced with emergency situations, I was able to communicate with a team under pressure. I administered first aid to pool patrons as needed. Additionally, I ran swimming lessons for people of all ages. This involved designing lesson plans to meet swimmers needs and adapting teaching methods for varied skill levels. Maintaining cleanliness, providing quality customer service and reporting maintenance issues was a vital aspect of my job.
