About Kate Evans
I am a highly experienced lawyer, with particular expertise in negotiating and advising on commercial contracts and intellectual property issues. Over the last 18 years I have worked in private practice and in-house. I have worked and advised at all levels of the business, on a wide variety of contracts and legal/compliance issues; from day-to-day matters to transformative projects aligned with business strategy, as well as contributing to the shape of the strategy itself. The breadth of my experience means that I am ideally placed to meet all business legal needs, particularly in an in-house legal environment. I have worked in-house for the last 9 years so am well used to providing high quality advice against challenging deadlines, whilst effectively managing risk. I am able to communicate with credibility and confidence at all levels of the business, and to present complex advice clearly. I enjoy meeting new people, and am good at relating to people at all levels, which helps to build engagement and trust with the legal department. My time in-house has also given me the opportunity to broaden my non-legal skill set, including managing budgets and relationships (supplier and customer), project management, and going beyond pure legal issues to help the business solve commercial problems. Specialties: Legal advice and legal compliance, commercial contracts, contract drafting, contract negotiation, contract management, intellectual property, trade marks, copyright, publishing, digital media, outsourcing, printing, distribution, e-commerce, consumer law, sponsorship, marketing, sales promotions, IT, real estate, dispute resolution, privacy.
Listed skills include Legal Advice, Legal Compliance, Commercial Contracts, Contract Negotiation, and 33 others.

Legal Counsel - Commercial
Senior Legal Counsel
As a senior member of the Commercial Legal team for Guardian Media Group (parent company of Guardian News & Media) I continued to advise the same business areas for Guardian News & Media as in my previous role. However, the move to GMG allowed me to broaden my skills and experience by also advising on contracts and legal issues across the wider Guardian group of companies, on large-scale cross-departmental transformative projects aligned with business strategy, and on high value, business critical contracts. Given the current challenging climate in the newspaper industry, I supported the business by enforcing appropriate cost controls and ensuring consistent implementation of company-wide strategic aims. I also welcomed the opportunity to contribute to shaping wider business and cost-saving strategy.
Commercial Lawyer
As a lawyer in the Commercial Legal team at Guardian News & Media (the owner and publisher of the Guardian, The Observer and theguardian.com), I was the sole legal contact for Marketing, Guardian Subscriptions, the Guardian print sites, newspaper distribution, Guardian Professional (the Guardian’s B2B division) and Guardian Events and was responsible for advising on all contracts and legal/compliance issues affecting these business areas. I was also responsible for managing the Guardian’s global trade mark portfolio, and developing and implementing trade mark strategy. This was a fantastic opportunity to work with a leading trusted brand in a dynamic environment, and to support the business as it developed and implemented cutting edge plans/projects. From the outset I advised and worked at all levels of the business. The Commercial Legal team was newly established as a stand-alone team when I joined the Guardian, so I worked quickly to establish strong relationships, to build trust and to roll out the new legal process across the business. A few years later I contributed to revising the legal process to make it more resource and cost efficient, allowing the legal team to concentrate on more high value, business critical contracts/projects.
Associate Solicitor
During my training, I developed a particular interest in commercial contracts and intellectual property, so I was pleased to be successfully retained on qualification by Lawrence Graham (now Gowling WLG) in its Commerce and Technology team, which focused on these areas. I advised on a broad range of commercial contracts and intellectual property issues to a wide range of clients (individuals, brand owners, high-tech companies, private and public companies, regulators/non-departmental public bodies). This included advising on the commercial/IP aspects of corporate transactions, such as AIM flotations and M&A deals.I had direct responsibility for advising particular clients, and would therefore advise on all commercial/IP legal issues for those clients. This enabled me to deepen my understanding of the client’s business and to build a strong relationship with the client. It also gave me exposure to a very wide variety of legal/compliance issues. I so enjoyed working in this way that a move in-house was the logical next step. My time at Lawrence Graham had been ideal grounding for working in-house, and made for a seamless transition to working at the Guardian in 2007.
Trainee Solicitor
I completed my training with Lawrence Graham (now Gowling WLG), with seats in the Dispute Resolution, Real Estate, Competition Law and Commerce and Technology teams. I was immediately given high levels of responsibility and lots of direct client contact, including at senior management level. From the outset I was trained to give clear, practical, solutions-based advice, an approach I have maintained throughout my career.
