Profile bio

About Kate Hartshorn

I am a recent graduate from Chapman University, where I studied Environmental Science and Policy. My academic career deepened my curiosity of the environment -- past simply the Earth's physical characteristics, and more to the interactions that take place between species and their surroundings. This curiosity has engaged me in social science research about attitudes towards climate change in Southern California which became my capstone project for Chapman's Honors College. Gifted with a great love and strength for writing, I am passionate about finding avenues to better communicate scientific ideas to the public. In my final year of undergrad I also undertook research in Colorado water systems which led to an opportunity with UCLA for international research. For the past summer I developed and completed an independent research project designed to evaluate organic treatments of wastewater on coffee farms in Rwanda. Outside of my academic experience, I have held a number of positions, ranging from roles in philanthropy to service work. My time in customer service has fine-tuned my communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities. I have found comfort as a leader, learning quickly in new roles, and adapting easily to a changing workplace environment. I am eager to apply the critical thinking of my undergraduate career to the work I am passionate about: connecting with people and protecting our environment.
