About Kate Mcbride

I am an Associate Professor in Population Health at Western Sydney University and current NSW Branch President of the Public Health Association. I and an epidemiologist with extensive experience using mixed methods to explore and evaluate health initiatives and outcomes with a strong focus on chronic disease prevention. I am the leading Australian expert on obesity and breast screening and also conduct work more broadly across the cancer screening space, as well as in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of obesity to prevent chronic disease my priorities. I advocate for change in the healthcare system so that there is greater focus on prevention.I am passionate about equity and addressing healthcare barriers for marginalised populations. I develop and evaluate chronic disease prevention interventions and work with multiple stakeholders, including with policy makers consumers, healthcare, and NGOs to find solutions to prevent chronic disease and poor health outcomes. These partnerships underpin translation of my research into impactful prevention strategies, research which I leverage to advocate for system level change.

As the Director of (Postgraduate Coursework) Academic Program (DAP) of initially 8 postgraduate programs in the School of Medicine, I undertook several strategic initiatives leading to increased student enrolments across the programs as well as increased postgraduate course offerings to 13. I reinvigorated postgraduate committee meetings, met each course coordinator to identify areas for growth, micro credentialling and marketing, mapped all assessments in an assessment quality activity, assisted with successful requests to the school for additional staffing, co-led redevelopment Epidemiology offerings (launched 2023).
