Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College is a 400-seat, state-of-the-art performing arts center at Midlands Technical College. Rooted in the performing arts, Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College offers programs and productions that encourage reflection, examination and discovery; and that provide entertainment, education and opportunity to professionals, learners and community members in all stages of life.In this role, I was responsible for the success of:- The Signature Series: A year-long series of performing arts presentations that bring the best in dance, theatre, music, comedy, and variety arts to the Midlands of South Carolina.- The HT@MTC Performance Incubator: An incubator for new work produced by Midlands-based professional performing artists and a resource for their professional development.- Educational Partnerships: Performing and technical production workshops for high school students and adults, as well as co-productions and learning opportunities in partnership with local school districts.- Rentals: Use of the facility by community-based performing arts organizations.Successful implementation of these programs required skill in market research and marketing implementation, contract negotiation, organizational management, interpersonal understanding and communication, budgeting, grant-writing, fundraising, planning, and public speaking and presentations.From The Free Times (the region's weekly newspaper):Truth be told, when Harbison Theatre started booking national touring arts productions, we had our doubts. Harbison, after all, is often considered “way out there” by downtown arts types. But now that we’re a few seasons in, we’ve learned not to doubt the judgment or determination of this local arts upstart.

Kate Fox Consulting provides strategic planning facilitation for non-profit organizations in the arenas of arts, education, sports, small business, and health services. Clients include (partial list) JDRF Palmetto Chapter, the SC Small Business Chamber of Commerce, the Columbia Quad Squad Roller Derby League, the Arts and Communication Studies Division of Columbia College, The Power Company (Contemporary Dance).As a strategic planning facilitator, I helped organizations focus their efforts and resources to attain their prioritized objectives and achieve their mission. This process included interviews with stakeholders, environmental scans, group workshops, and work plan review. As a facilitator, I assured the comfort level of participants, encouraged thoughtful participation, identified and encouraged groups to address sensitive topics, and encouraged prioritization of goals as it applied to application of resources. At the conclusion of the planning process, each organization had an actionable plan, approved by its board of directors, to be implemented, updated, and measured during the ensuing three to five years.

Harbison Theatre At Midlands Technical College

TEDxColumbiaSC brings together community members for a day of talks, performances, and open space discussions that have and will lead to positive changes in Columbia, SC, which is a super great place to live, already.As Chair of the Project (2014), I was responsible for fundraising, volunteer staff management and budget oversight.As Chair of Speaker Selection (2010-13) I managed the application and interview process for speakers and performers. Each year 45-60 potential speakers were interviewed, and 12-15 were chosen based on area of expertise and ingenuity.As Chair of Event Production (2010-14) I was responsible for the day-off staging and technical production of the event. This required production management prowess, volunteer management and a good sense of humor.

Columbia's New Audience Road Show takes adults behind the scenes with local arts organizations, helping them learn the basics of each art form and the role of each organization in our community. In this role, I worked with representatives of seven local arts organizations to develop interactive experiences for uninitiated audiences, successfully implemented public relations tactics to attract participants and maintain a waiting list, and conducted follow-up surveys to determine the five year success rate of the program's intention to create regularly and actively participating new arts audiences. The most successful participating arts organizations have seen an 89% return rate among "roadies"; the least successful, 72%.

The Masters of Public Administration Programs and Masters of Teaching programs at the College of Charleston prepare students to serve as leaders of arts organizations (private, public, and non-profit) or to serve as teachers of the arts in public and private settings.In this role, I instructed a graduate level course in arts education, tailored for students in the Masters of Public Administration and Masters of Teaching programs. The course examined the physical, cognitive, social, and civic growth human beings gain via involvement in the arts throughout their lifespan, and the regulatory environments that affect the delivery of those arts experiences.

The education program of the SCAC promotes equal access to a sequential education in the visual, performing, literary and media arts for all South Carolina students; The Artists' Ventures Initiative builds infrastructure through which professional artists network and learn the entrepreneurial skills necessary to a sustainable career in the arts.For both programs I managed grant-making programs (yearly budgets of 350,000 and $50,000, respectively) and designed and implemented training seminars with partnering colleges, universities, and professional organizations. In this position I also served as a consultant to all arts organizations in six S.C. counties -- providing guidance on organizational management and budgeting issues while helping them build relationships with local governments and school districts.
