In my final placement on the graduate programme, I worked as a strategic officer within the policy team of Forestry Commission Wales. This included working on important environment legislation for Wales, the Forestry Commission's purpose and direction summaries and taking the lead on determining indicators for the Woodland for Wales guidelines.

In my second placement on the graduate programme, I was the Project Manager for two schemes in Forest Research: The Hylobius Integrated Management System; a tool to enable the control of the pine weevil in forestry sites across Britain, and the Dyfi Catchment and Woodland Research Platform; a multi-functional research platform incorporating the Forestry Commission, Forest Research, EcoDyfi, Dyfi Biosphere and the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea. The Forestry Commission Graduate Development Programme included spending time in various placements within the Forestry Commission across a span of 2 years. After this period, it was expected that I would apply for a fixed position within the wider civil service management (applied successfully for Local Partnership Advisor, Yorkshire and North East, July 2012).This role included working as an operational forester in the Scottish Lowlands Forest District and was hugely varied, with jobs ranging from high-end stakeholder meetings, to budget planning and monitoring, to supervising and managing contractors on site. My duties include organising rehabilitation schedules, writing reports for clients, leading a team of other RSWs, liaising with prospective clients for the hospital and representing the hospital in the city and to potential benefactors. York House Rehabilitation Hospital is privately owned and I spent a lot of time shadowing senior managers, gaining insight into the workings of a hugely successful business.
