Basingstoke

Together with my business partner and co-founder, Samantha Hunter, The Business Skills Consultancy offers interactive workshops teaching business owners how to write a business plan and to use it effectively to enable profit and growth. I continue to work on various projects. Using Sketch Engine, to do corpus research for sample sentences and to evaluate definition for a sentence dictionary project, I work on a freelance basis from home. I really enjoyed working closely with and analysing the language, and working efficiently to complete the lists I was set in a timely manner.

I balanced commissioning responsibility for the nursing and health list, including campus calling and conference visits, list strategy and management, alongside development editor tasks for core high revenue texts and was editorial project manager for a digital product ‘The Social Work Toolkit’ offering online resources. I managed an editorial assistant and digital development editor. I also helped implement a new strategy for the digitisation of the textbooks across the Higher Education department and the future e-book delivery process.I worked closely with marketing, sales and production colleagues across varied elements of my role.

I started at Palgrave Macmillan as an assistant editor supporting the Publisher on the Social Work list and the Senior Commissioning Editor on the Nursing and Health list. I undertook core editorial tasks including copywriting, review management, jacket design briefing, reprints, proposal and manuscript analysis and preparation.

Being an editor for the dictionaries department at Oxford University Press enabled me to expand my editorials skills and use my corpus linguistic knowledge. I worked on two projects; a sentence dictionary, selecting suitable example sentences for individual senses, and a collocate dictionary, researching and allocating collocates to core words and assigning example sentences, for a bilingual dictionary. Both projects were on tight schedules hence I had to work accurately but efficiently.

Winchester

As Assistant Publications Officer at Hampshire County Council, I worked on a variety of paper and electronic publications, ranging from leaflets, newsletters, curriculum folders and websites for schools. I gained experience of copy editing, typesetting and proof-reading. I became proficient in using a web content management system.

Oxford

I worked once a week for the Oxford English Dictionary correcting conversion errors doing minor editing in the entries. I had to undertake a range of varied tasks, be careful and accurate in my work and be adaptable to the needs of the editors.
