About Kate S.
I love to take stories apart and see what makes them work. Early on, as the daughter of a writer and an aspiring writer myself, and now, as a professional editor, I have always loved looking at stories, at both the impact they have and the way they are sculpted. I am passionate about fantasy and science fiction and most of their multitudinous subgenres, and I love to look at the big things going on underneath the surface--worldbuilding, plots and subplots, character development. In addition to reacting to stories as a fan, I've trained in developmental editing through the editing major at Brigham Young University. In the course of my studies, I did a lot of research about what makes good writing and editing; I also edited several full manuscripts.I also enjoy copyediting; in my BYU program, I took an entire class dedicated to copyediting and learning Chicago style, which I now apply with a deft hand, and another class in which I relied heavily on copyediting skills to prepare a manuscript for publishing. And, as the last part of my hat trick of skills, I do typesetting. I have actually worked in typesetting the longest, long before I set my sights on an editing program. I began with on-the-job training and lots of work experience, but I have also improved my skills and understanding through advanced university courses and two typesetting internships with WordFrie Press (run by the eminent Kevin J. Anderson) and Future House Publishing, a local Utah press. I don't discriminate much in typesetting projects: quick jobs or long, practical or ultra-designed, I enjoy them all.So drop me line. Let's see how I can help your manuscript shine.
Kate S. work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Publishing Assistant
I began working with WordFire Press as a publishing intern, responsible for the interior formatting and cover design of their ebook boxed sets. When the internship ended, they hired me to continue working on boxed sets. I also started working on their ARCs, for which I designed a reusable cover template. I do interior formatting in Vellum and covers in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. To date, I have completed 8 ARCs, 10+ boxed sets, 15+ covers, and several other final editions of books.
Book Designer
I operate as a freelance editor and typesetter, and editor. I have been working as a typesetter since 2016 and studying and working as an editor since 2019.
Marketing Specialist
I typeset books in both InDesign and Vellum, offer developmental feedback, and manage social media marketing efforts for an excellent indie author.
Project Assistant
I aid in the administrative work in the School of Music at Brigham Young University. In addition to normal clerical work, I also had the opportunity to edit the School of Music handbook. This is an important document that is intended to be the first source music majors turn to when they have questions. Unfortunately, no one was reading it. The handbook was an 80-page document accessible only by Google search, composed mainly of unimportant or duplicated information that could be found more easily on the school website. I was able to discard irrelevant information, remove redundancy, offer suggestions for navigating information already online, and summarize the most important points and policies in a 2-page document.
Publishing Intern
I read 6 potential manuscripts, made purchasing recommendations, and offered high-level developmental suggestions on those books. I also copyedited the company website and typeset 3 novels in InDesign.
