Kate’s fascination for all things business saw her founding a business at 27 years old.With no prior entrepreneurial experience, she identified a gap in the Singapore market and successfully negotiated for exclusive dealership for a range of jewellery to be sold in Singapore. Her intuition was proven right when the product was quickly accepted to be sold by 3 different leading department stores along Singapore's famous shopping belt, Orchard Road. The practical application of product, price, place, promotion and people management brought her understanding and appreciation of these topics to a whole new level. Not content with status quo, she launched a new business model selling high-end jewellery (designed in-house) through world-renowned auction house, Sotheby’s. The products were exhibited around Asia to the exclusive HNWI clientele of the auction house before their eventual sale in Hong Kong. To build awareness and branding of the business, Kate experimented with communications strategies across various platforms. In a PR campaign, Kate not only negotiated for the agency to be remunerated based on results, she directed the messaging that resulted in her being interviewed on national radio, featured on the cover of a luxury magazine and 6 other national publications within a 5 month period. The financial crisis of 2008 saw Kate reviewing the businesses in terms of industry, business-model, personal health and values. She made the decision to transit into the corporate world in 2010. Through her corporate work in business development, Kate was invited to restructure a sales department that was responsible for over SGD 10MIL in annual revenue. That stint initiated her into "softer" aspects of business building through change management, leadership development and corporate culture building. In 2014, her love for business strategy and models saw her applying to INSEAD to continue her education in business building and management. She was accepted into the Executive MBA program and graduated in 2015.
