Analyzed dryland vegetation dynamics in the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area in South Africa for the years 2016-2020. The research took over a year to conduct in which I took part in three separate collaborative research groups to cumulate into a Senior Thesis. Initial analysis was conducted with one other UCCS peer and a professor acting as an advisor. First, document analysis was conducted analyzing the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier National Park Master Integrated Development Plan (KAZA IDP), the Individual Countries Master IDPs, and Environmental legislation to understand environmental management. A 20-year fire recurrence map was created using additive modeling of MODIS Burned Area data between 2001 and 2020. During the Fall 2020 semester, I and two other UCCS peers continued research and presented initial findings at the UCCS Mountain Lion Research Fair. MODIS NDVI and PERSSIANN precipitation data were introduced to the research project during this stage. I used the final research stage to complete a thesis during the Spring semester of 2021. I used the Trends.Earth desertificaion QGIS plug-in to isolate the study areas of interest. Through the use of all prior data fire recurrence rates, precipitation rates, NDVI, and management practices were then compared to identify if any act as drivers of desertification. JASP was used to conduct a multiple regression analysis. My research showed no significant correlation between fire recurrence rates, precipitation, or land management to a decrease in NDVI in 2019. I believe this may indicate that large livestock and megafauna grazing could be the driver of desertification in this region. Further research recommendations include acquiring high-resolution imagery for land cover identification and utilizing precipitation data with a compatible resolution to the existing data for further statistical analysis Co-authored research paper to be published in the journal Remote Sensing by MDPI.
