My interest in archaeology started back in 2002 with a summer dig at Piddington Roman Villa in Northamptonshire with UNAS. From here I went on to take a BA in Archaeology at the University of Southampton, graduating with a 1st class honours degree in 2006. My dissertation looked at the distribution of Neolithic tombs in Pembrokeshire, Wales - this (largely self-taught) experience of GIS inspired me to stay at Southampton for a further year to take an MSc in Archaeological Computing (Spatial Technologies) which I completed in 2007 with a Distinction. My Masters dissertation looked at local communities views of the historic landscape, and inspired within me an interest in collaboration between amateurs and professionals. To this end, I volunteered for a few months for the Portable Antiquities Scheme with Steven Ashby, the then Northamptonshire FLO, before moving to Norfolk for six months to work for the PAS and HER as a data assistant. In 2009 I moved back to the University of Southampton, to undertake a PhD in Archaeology, in collaboration with the British Museum. Completed in 2012, this PhD aimed to understand the spatial distribution of finds recorded by the PAS, through an exploration of the biases inherent in the data recorded for Hampshire, Northamptonshire and the Isle of Wight. A grant by the Leverhulme Trust has enabled the continuation of this project at a nationwide scale for a further three years.
