Amazon Jungle, Napo, Ecuador

As an Anthropological Field Researcher, I lived among the Kichwa people in the summer of 2013 in a remote area of the Amazon jungle of Ecuador. I conducted field-based research in six communities to determine how a unique blend of community driven development methods benefited members of the Kallari Community Cooperative, a group of Kichwa cacao farmers. Drawing on this research, I discovered the development methods used by the Kallari helped the cacao farmers conserve natural resources, increase their income, preserve their culture, and solve sustainability issues. Through analyzing the success the Kallari has had with implementing a development approach that transgresses traditional development categories, new understanding may influence how development will move forward in the future.• Gathered cultural data using qualitative research methods• Transcribed and coded over 75 hours of recorded audio and video interviews• Analyzed research data for trends using qualitative software program• Utilized data to write a mentored undergraduate 50-page thesis• Presented work at the Utah Conference of Undergraduate Research Feb.2014
