About Kathleen Bailey
From science researcher to strategist and fundraiser, I have dedicated my career to advancing innovative research, educational opportunities, and outreach programs. My passion for science fuels my mission to accelerate discovery and inspire curiosity for the next generation. In my current role as Associate Dean and Senior Director of Development for the Physical Sciences Division at the University of Chicago, I have had the privilege of working across seven departments and six institutes representing over 200 faculty, 1500 students, and 14,000 alumni. I effectively connect interdisciplinary partners across a variety of programs and forge relationships with external constituents to advance our mission of defining and advancing new fields. My goal is to advance both basic and translational research, addressing fundamental scientific theory as well as the most pressing scientific challenges in our society today. In addition to my administrative leadership role, I also teach an undergraduate genetics course of my own design. In an effort to advance diversity in scientific careers, and to complement the pathway programs we support, my course teaches foundational concepts through an approachable lens grounded in current events and ethical questions. I demonstrate science as curiosity and asking questions rather than as memorization of facts, and in so doing, encourage students to see themselves as scientists. I strive to support each student as an active participant in both the scientific method and in modern scientific discourse.
