As someone who is outdoorsy, active and desires to meet people from all over the world, Beaver Creek Kid's Ski School support staff offered me everything I wanted in that I worked on my feet and outside for a majority of the day and worked alongside co-workers (of which 75% spoke English as their second language). My role as a support staff member included but certainly were not limited to setting up the ski yard, checking-in kids, helping ski instructors with their classes, working with peers to ensure safety, attending to the needs of children, serving lunch, answering the questions of guests, and cleaning up at the end of the day. My initiative, natural leadership and ability to connect and communicate effectively with my international co-workers did not go unnoticed, and resulted in my being promoted to team lead within the first three weeks of the season. As a team lead, I served as a role model for the team to follow, answered questions and resolved concerns of staff and guests alike, offered support to my supervisors, lead daily meetings in which I delegated tasks and provided feedback, and helped to train international staff members (leaning on my proficiency in Spanish to offer clarification and bridge the communication gap). Working as a support staff team lead refined my interpersonal communication skills, taught me how to work with people from different cultural backgrounds and embrace individuals' strengths, and offered me the chance to explore what my leadership skills can look like in a professional setting.

At the age of 19, I was a substitute teacher at McAuliffe Manual Middle School, a Title I 6-8 school in inner city Denver off Colfax Ave. My job as a sub was to maintain order in the classroom and manage the tasks or teach a lesson plan delegated by an absent teacher. I also took it upon myself to engage with students, form personal relationships, learn different teachers' teaching styles, and most importantly, show respect and decency towards all students and staff. On days when I did not have an assignment I would co-teach math classes, gym classes, and even teach my own creative writing class. Oftentimes, I also had to settle physical and verbal disputes among students, work one-on-one to help struggling students with their academics, counsel students in distress, and assist teachers to manage the classroom when students were acting up. This job taught me a lot about conflict resolution, leadership, teaching, organization and time management, and, most importantly, how to gain the respect of those who don't give it freely.
