President, Multi-Club Liason, And Social Media Coordinator

Materials Science & Engineering (Mse) Club

Boise, Idaho Area

In this role, I help coordinate events for the BSU community. I am the project manager for the annual STEM Gala & Casino Night, which I started in spring 2019. I initiated this event with the goal of creating a fun, stress-free event for the BSU community to not only enjoy but to meet people outside of their field. I began contacting other STEM clubs and asking if they'd like to participate. Once six other clubs agreed to help, I organized meetings to get a plan in place and execute our ideas. I gave roles to each club, and I guided them where needed. It was very successful. At this event, 164 people attended, and I was the Master of Ceremonies (MC). For this event, I have raised a total of $8,921, with $5,605 secured single-handedly. I did all of this while balancing my graduate research studies (i.e. mentoring, sample growing, and data analyzing). I am very excited to be managing this event again next year.In addition, I help coordinate all other MSE Club events. I played a critical role in finding sponsorships for the Nerd Run 5K 2019, of which we raised a total of $1,770 to go towards undergraduate conference travel grants.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Boise, Idaho Area

I worked with Dr. Peter Mullner in the classes: "Materials for Society," or MSE 246, and "Crystallography & Crystal Chemistry," or MSE 605.In 2020: I was awarded the Graduate Teaching "TA of the Year" Award, quoting Dr. Megan Frary, from the Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering for my work as a TA. Dr. Mullner wrote me a thank-you email: "I can't say enough how much I appreciate all you have done in supporting the students learning course content and me in delivering the course. You have been super helpful. I so much appreciate having been able to rely on you, even before but particularly during the COVID-19 remote teaching experience. THANK YOU! ... You are the best." I recorded and time-stamped the help sessions I held for the students during the COVID-19 online transition. One student personally emailed to me: "The recordings have really helped me with the homework. Thanks for putting so much time into it." I researched and compiled info on online learning tools, and I created Kahoots (see links) for the students to help them study. In 2018: Dr. Mullner wrote to me in an email, "I was impressed with your motivation, initiative, and creativity." He later wrote in his Instructor Evaluation: "Katie did a fantastic job and went above and beyond the call of duty." There were 33 students in the class. During my TA position, I rewrote and added to all handwritten notes into an electronic format; I organized and conducted weekly help sessions for students (averaged 8 students/session); created instructional videos for difficult concepts; wrote weekly announcements/reminders; and prepared for and taught about electrical properties of semiconductors during one full class period. Five separate students approached me to ask if I would hold a final exam help session, because "Your sessions are so helpful." Seventeen students (52%) attended this help session.

Graduate Research Assistant, Ph.D. Candidate

Boise, Idaho Area

In this job, I work with Dr. Paul J. Simmonds in the group, Collaboratory for the Epitaxy of Nanomaterials (CEN), to create novel group IV/III-V structures using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). I am working towards earning a PhD in materials science and engineering. During my time at Boise State in the CEN group, I have learned how to operate and maintain an MBE machine. I've designed 76 experiments, participated in 156 sample growths, and grew 53 sample samples completely independently. I have spent ample time teaching others how to operate an MBE and analyze data from the samples we grow. I am skilled with Raman spectroscopy and analysis, since I use this technique to determine the strain in quantum dots. I have presented my research at 6 separate conferences to date, and I successfully defended my dissertation proposal (candidacy entrance exam) May 1st, 2019.
