About Kathryn Ayers Wickenhauser, Mba, Fachdm, Chpc
You could say my career in healthcare has been serendipitous, and I would agree. I wish I could tell the 16 year old me scanning paper medical charts about the future and interoperability of health IT. For as long as I can remember, I've had a passion for healthcare. A high school science fair project turned my interest in neuroscience into a position as a stroke research lab technician at Washington University School of Medicine. I loved my four years in the lab, but I knew that I enjoyed human interaction over hours with lab mice. Two physician’s offices and thousands of abstracted patient charts later, I knew I “got” EHRs, and was hired at KIG Healthcare as an EHR Implementation Specialist. That role didn’t last long, as I quickly found myself as the Meaningful Use Expert within KIG. When GBS Corp. bought KIG in 2011, I became the Healthcare Reform Team Lead, specializing in Meaningful Use, PQRS, and other pay-for-performance opportunities. During my three years at KIG / GBS and beyond, I assisted over 100 individual practices and more than 3,000 unique providers collect more than $45 million in incentive payments, avoid more than $20 million in penalties, and then more than 50 providers pass audits. Joining DataFile Technologies in September of 2014 offered a new opportunity: master HIPAA practices through watching health information management firsthand. Three roles later at DataFile, and I'm proud to have helped healthcare practices and professionals every day through thought leadership and education on hot topics like interoperability and healthcare compliance at conferences all across the country like MGMA and AHIMA. I wear my #HIPAAnerd badge with pride. Understanding the need for trust and compliance to enable interoperability between disparate healthcare organizations presented a new opportunity. In 2018, I joined the small (but mighty!) non-profit team at DirectTrust to continue to spread the word about how a consensus-based trust framework and standards lead to increased data sharing, frictionless information flow, better care decisions, decreased cost, and therefore better healthcare outcomes. I could not love my job more. Healthcare is changing quickly and presents new challenges every day. I've seen it all, from the advent of EHR systems and the beginning of paper scanning, to Meaningful Use, to HIPAA challenges, to interoperability and enabling safe and expeditious information flow for improved care.I'm very proud to play whatever part I can in supporting the quadruple aim and a better healthcare system for all.
