“You’re not normal, are you?” It wasn’t the first time I had heard that particular phrase, but it was the first time it came from a medical professional. I’ve heard it from teachers, police, co-workers and so many others who have known me for a moment. But hearing it from a complete stranger in a professional setting was new.It made me laugh.It also made me think. She saw me as not normal because I wasn’t acting in the expected way. But how can anything be expected if we are all unique. When we do what we are unique designed to do – in our voice and in our strengths – then it can’t be ordinary and “normal.”The more I thought about it, the more I determined to lean into my unique design.I stopped trying to strengthen my weaknesses and looked for folks that were strong where I was weak – after all, we are so much better when we go together. I embraced my strengths and continued to learn and grow in them.I stopped trying to follow someone else’s path and began to embrace my unique cadence. I stopped trying to hold on to all that I was supposed to hold on to and began releasing the stuff, the expectations, and ultimately the limitations of what others had placed on me. I discovered that I couldn’t grab something new if I was too busy holding on to what was.The more I stopped, the more traction I found to go. I realized that by embracing my uniqueness, rather than trying to conform to others' expectations, I could truly thrive. And we were made to thrive.Now, I'm determined to stop the world and help you get off. You have a unique path as well, and when you understand that uniqueness, you will be "not normal" as well.
