Kathy Lawrence serves as Accountability in Antibiotics for the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center, at the George Washington University Milken Institute for Public Health, where she consults on further development and expansion of the Certified Responsible Antibiotic Use standard she spearheaded while at School Food Focus. She is founder and executive director of the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy, and also serves on Newburgh's Strategic Economic Development Advisory Committee. A leader in the fields of sustainable agriculture, local food systems development, and non-profit management for over 25 years, Kathy was co-founder and senior director for School Food Focus, a national collaborative that leveraged the knowledge and procurement power of large school districts to make school meals across the country more healthful, regionally sourced and sustainably produced. For nearly a decade, she provided strategic vision and development of Focus multi-district procurement initiatives as well as oversight of programmatic work with USDA departments, internal and external communications and legal research. Prior to that, Kathy initiated and for two years taught students in the Chinese language program at the Storm King School, after serving for five years as Executive Director of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture. Before that she directed Just Food, the New York City-based non-profit organization she founded in 1995. Her achievements at Just Food included initiating the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in NYC program and The City Farms, an urban agriculture and food access program. While developing the foundation for Just Food, Kathy coordinated public information, outreach and education for both the New York and Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Groups (NYSAWG and NESAWG) and facilitated multi-sector citizen advocacy at the United Nations on sustainable agriculture and food security issues.Kathy’s other passions include singing, hiking, and gardening. She holds a BA in East Asian Languages and Culture from the University of Kansas and a Master of International Affairs, Economic and Political Development, from Columbia University.
