—Masters Thesis Title: "Using Phytoliths as a Proxy for North Carolina's Evolving Vegetation Dynamics Throughout the Holocene to Modern Day".—Developed an interdisciplinary research plan to statistically analyze modern soil phytolith (plant microfossil) assemblages from different vegetation communities in North Carolina's Level III EPA Ecoregions.—Collected soils from various sites, including North Carolina State Parks and Nature Preserves, and conducted field surveys of ecological traits. Worked with various property owners to communicate scientific goals and obtain research permission.—Performed extensive lab work, microscopy, and phytolith analysis. Utilized published literature to classify unique phytolith morphotypes from North Carolina.—Wrote and ran MATLAB code for statistical analysis (bootstrapping, MANOVA, and PCA) of phytolith assemblages.—Developed a modern reference collection of soil phytolith assemblages from soils across North Carolina's ecoregions.—Compared modern soil phytolith assemblages to cored Holocene soil phytolith assemblages in the North Carolina Piedmont.—Developed figures, maps, and communications of results for scientific and non-scientific audiences to share ecological knowledge and findings.—Assisted Dr. Ethan Hyland with writing a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation for this research.
