Great Hearts Live Oak

I coach teachers on instructional techniques based on classroom observation. I set up our school’s first team of mentor and math coaches and improved the consistency and quality of instructional coaching for first-year teachers. I am currently working on a project improving the alignment of our 3-5 grammar and writing curriculum with reading language arts TEKS. I also contribute by leading and sometimes designing teacher trainings, planning sub schedules, screening substitute teacher candidates, preparing a weekly faculty newsletter, and other administrative tasks.

By working individually with teachers and sharing my observations with school administration, I support our school in creating a cohesive manner of teaching math consistent with the principles of Singapore math and the philosophical pillars of Great Hearts Academies. I observe elementary math lessons once a week and offer feedback to the teacher with a particular view to helping that teacher produce quality instruction with Singapore math teaching techniques. I also offer feedback on math lesson plans and the yearly scope and sequence.

I plan and teach 5th grade math to four sections using a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to teaching a Singapore math curriculum as well as a socratic approach consistent with classical education. I contribute to our faculty culture by leading faculty seminars on close-reading of texts such as Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." Additionally, I have lead new teacher trainings on techniques for teaching math, helped our dean of teachers create and present professional development programs, and lead and assisted in student clubs.

I taught 22 English classes a week for grades 3-6 at two Korean public elementary schools. I collaborated with my coteachers to plan lessons and I modified and created activities to supplement the curriculum. I have also designed and taught two non-curriculum classes. In the first class, I took my 3rd grade students (including many who haven't received English language instruction before) from learning the alphabet to practicing phonics to reading curriculum level material. In the second class, I built on that foundation to teach my 4th grade students how to write basic SV, SVO, and SVA sentences with the goal of enabling them to describe their experiences and tell simple stories. I taught informative lessons that built progressively to S-S communication in English. I most enjoyed teaching phonics, reading, stories, and communication.
