About Katie Miller
I am passionate about utilizing community engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and systems-thinking to create change within health systems, climate change and their many intersections.Through volunteering at local food and farming events I have gained an appreciation for the value of community and place in change-making. As well, as a user researcher I was been able to meaningfully connect with a community for solution design. My undergraduate degree, Knowledge Integration, taught me how to use interdisciplinary collaboration effectively and I am excited to be in spaces where that is central to problem-solving. I utilized systems-thinking in my MSc Global Health Policy dissertation and created a systems map to investigate leverage points for reducing the carbon emissions of health systems. Moving forward, I am looking for opportunities to keep problem-solving with these methods at the intersection of health systems, policy, and climate change.

Graduate Project Specialist
Research Assistant
I worked on two projects in this role. First, I managed the integration of research (policy review, data extraction and empirical literature review) on public financing of home care in England and Ireland into a publishable research paper. This process included writing, editing and the development of visual tools. I also completed a review of the literature on the role of sleep disorders in admission of dementia patients to long term care and helping to write a commentary on the topic. This role enhanced my ability to adapt to unfamiliar topic areas effectively and efficiently and further refine my research skills.
Cheesemonger
I was responsible for managing customer interaction, rapidly understanding their needs and effectively communicating to provide information and recommendations. This role enhanced my abilities to quickly and effectively become comfortable within new disciplines or project areas. While I had no previous formal training on cheesemaking or tasting notes, I was able to learn and integrate as a cheesemonger to provide valuable insights for customers which lead to positive outcomes and satisfied customers.
Bar Staff
I was responsible for quickly and effectively communicating with customers to serve their needs, I provided recommendations based on my knowledge of food and drink and problem-solved. This role further developed my skills of communication as well as my ability to take in new information quickly, analyze that against my knowledge and respond accordingly to the situation at hand. I was responsible for managing a large section of customers which requires strong time management. I strengthened my ability to rapidly prioritize tasks within changing circumstances. Overall, I developed my ability to communicate effectively, manage tasks and provide service in a fast-paced environment all while maintaining my composure.
Technological Stewardship Intern
At the Engineering Change Lab, I helped to develop the beta version of the Tech Stewardship educational and community engagement platform. In my role as User Research and Testing Lead, I developed materials for community outreach and recruitment to the beta group. I recruited over 80 beta group members, and I further engaged with 15 of those members to complete user research interviews. The recruitment and interview process refined my community engagement and oral communication skills. This process involved developing the interview implementation plan, creating a script, and undertaking hour long interviews. The results of the interviews were processed and coded then translated into user profiles which would help to further inform the design of the platform. Managing the user research for the project provided me with experience managing my own project, while coordinating and collaborating with a larger interdisciplinary team.
Summer Staff
As a Parks Facilities and Maintenance Staff I was responsible for helping to maintain a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for all visitors to Albion Hills Conservation Area. As well as interacting and engaging with visitors to provide customer services and create a positive and memorable experience. Many of the situations could be tense and require immediate attention, for example, when a camp site had been flooded due to extreme rain. Campers were frustrated, stressed and some extremely angry. I had to understand their need for information on fixing the issue and respond in such a way that de-escalated the situation while also balancing implementation of the solution. In many of these situations communication was about taking stock of how people were feeling and the broader environment to understand how best to engage and most important when not to engage. As a result, this role developed my ability understand how best to approach people in a variety of situations and to always try and approach with empathy.
Outdoor Summer Student
I worked to re-paint fire hydrants within the Town of Caledon. I was responsible for developing a schedule of tasks each day and managing my time appropriately to reach targets set by management. The self-managed style encouraged refinement of my time management and independent work skills.
Summer Student
I surveyed consumers of farm products and participants in the community garden to help improve farm practices and worked with upper management to help develop education programs for visiting elementary and high school students. I also completed general farm labour, including helping to build a vermi-composter.
